UniGas fleet: Sustainable and innovative

UniBarge’s new UniGas fleet is another important step in making inland shipping more sustainable. Our modern UniGas I, II and III gas tankers are equipped with the latest technologies that meet the strictest environmental standards. We use these tanker barges to transport gases such as butane, propane, and ammonia along shipping routes through the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland.

Smart and efficient gas transportation

The UniGas I, II and III tankers are designed to meet the highest requirements for environmental friendliness and transport efficiency in inland navigation. Each of these gas tankers has a length of 135 metres and contains eight 380 cubic metre cargo tanks, making them the largest capacity in their class and the first in Europe of this size. UniBarge is the fourth largest player in gas transportation, but it does have the largest available vessels in its fleet. This allows us to transport more gas per trip, which reduces the number of vessel movements, benefits the environment, and reduces costs.

Identical gas tankers for optimal deployment

All three tankers are identical. This offers many advantages: the crew can move seamlessly from one ship to another, because everything is exactly the same on each ship. This is efficient, promotes confidence and flexibility, provides transparency for our employees, and is also practical. The three ships are basically triplet sisters.

Was added to our fleet in late 2023. This was the first ship in the UniGas fleet, and laid the foundation for increasing the sustainability of our operations.

Entered into service in January 2024. In addition to carrying butane and propane, it can also transport ammonia, making it a highly versatile vessel. Our tankers are suitable for transporting multiple types of new and renewable fuels to various destinations.

Was completed in the summer of 2024, is the most recent addition to the fleet. This vessel is fully operational and marks the completion of our project to build three gas tankers within one year. This vessel can also carry multiple types of gas.

Stage V engines with SCR catalysts

Our gas tankers are designed to ensure safe and efficient transportation, and they also play a crucial role in reducing our carbon footprint. All UniGas vessels are equipped with Stage V engines with SCR catalysts, which significantly reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulates. Thanks to this equipment, we meet the most stringent emission standards and contribute to more sustainable inland navigation.

Sailing on HVO100

In addition, our gas tankers run on HVO100 (hydrotreated vegetable oil), a renewable fuel made from waste and residual streams such as used frying oil. Our partnership with Reinplus Fiwado Bunker and Slurink Bunker Stations guarantees reliable deliveries of HVO. Our use of this fuel is reducing our CO₂ emissions by up to 90%. HVO fuel also ensures engines operate smoothly, and fuel can be stored for long periods without loss of quality. The result? Gains for the environment, the climate, and our planet on multiple fronts.

Reliable and safe transportation solutions in inland shipping

Safety and reliability are of paramount importance to UniBarge. All our inland barges meet the strictest safety standards, and are crewed by well-trained professionals. Regular training of our personnel ensures that loads are always transported safely and efficiently.
